Brother Intellifax 2800

The Brother Intellifax 2800 is a great starter fax for the small or home business. It has many features that are generally restricted to machines at a much higher price point to this one.

The Intellifax 2800 is an affordable monochrome laser fax with copying capability built in. Features like fax broadcast, dual access, built-in memory, automatic document feeder and auto dialing make this a versatile machine for a busy office.

The 14.4k modem can send a legal-sized document in a little under 4 seconds, while the built in memory has enough capacity to remember 130 pages of received faxes if the paper runs out. This is unlikely except in extremely busy times, as the Intellifax 2800 comes with a 200 sheet paper drawer built in.

There is also a 20 page automatic document feeder that may look a little flimsy, but is much stronger than it looks. This serves both fax and copying, and didn’t jam once in our tests.

Copy quality is good with 64 shades of gray to choose from, even simple images or graphics are rendered pretty accurately. Text is sharp and details with very little jagging on edges. Toner seemed to be evenly spread on larger texts, which is something dedicated printers can’t always produce.

Dual access is a nice feature to have. It allows users to load faxes even while the machine is doing other things, like transmitting or receiving other faxes. This allows users to get on with their work while not having to wait until it has finished doing what it’s doing. A nice time saving feature.

The fax has all the other features you would expect. Auto dials, fax forwarding, broadcasting, speed dialing, data/voice switching, configurable cover sheets and document resizing.

Consumables for the Intellifax 2800 are quite reasonable too. One comes with the unit when you buy it, and replacements are around $20 for a toner that is good for 2200 pages, while the drum is $68 and will last 12000.

In summary, the Intellifax 2800 is an excellent buy for the small or home office. It is cheap enough and robust enough to be worthy of consideration when you next need to buy one. Fax and copy quality is excellent and the machine is flexible enough to fulfill most needs.

HP LaserJet 5550

For a totally different color and monochromatic printing experience, Hewlett Packard offers the HP LaserJet 5550 for official as well as personal use. This printer gives superior quality printouts at a highly reasonable price. With a well designed chassis this laser jet printer has served our printing needs quite economically ever since we bought it a couple of years ago.

After paying the price for this printing machine our major concerns were speed of work and quality of print outs. Previously we had a printing system at our work place which gave us a pretty tough time especially when large documents had to be printed in a short period of time. Compared to that HP LaserJet 5550 was a sigh of relief and saved tremendous amount of time which was wasted while we waited for prints to come out of our previous printer.

Besides this beneficial feature the HP LaserJet 5550 has several other plus points which we have discovered over years of using it in our workplace. With a 160MB expandable memory, this printer can work with OC as well as MAC and produces fast printouts at a speed of 27 pages per minute for both color and black and white prints. Its 600dpi resolution produces vibrant, clear and sharp images, texts, diagrams as well as graphs on any media including envelopes, heavy-weight glossy paper, transparencies, labels, plain paper, heavy-weight paper, glossy paper, cards, recycled paper and high-gloss paper depending on the user requirements.

One feature of the HP LaserJet 5550 color printer that has proved extremely helpful for us is its Parallel, USB and Ethernet ports. Through these ports every worker has been able to take printouts immediately. When we first bought this printing system installing it and getting started was not an issue due to the user manual that came with the package. The drivers were also easily configured in no time. What we did not know at the time of purchase was the fact that this printer had an automatic duplexing or dual side printing system.

The 500 sheet input tray, 100 sheet multipurpose tray and 16 seconds warm up time make it very fast and easy to take good quality monochrome or color prints for any purpose. Through our experience we have found the HP LaserJet 5550 printer to be a worthwhile addition to the series of products developed by HP so far. Over the years it has offered maximum affordability through its lasting color toners, convenience and support for the relative personal and official purposes of all our workers.

HP LaserJet P4515

We have a HP LaserJet P4515 in our publishing office, and have had it for a little while now. We are a small publishing house in the North-West and can’t afford the industrial sized printers of our larger competitors so we had to be clever about how we spent our money.

The P4515 was the ideal choice really. Hewlett Packard is a name we knew, had direct experience with and had worked with before. Both I and a colleague had worked with them before and had positive experiences using them. Add to that decent purchase prices, low-ish running costs and a reputation for decent quality printing and reliability and we were on to a winner.

The combination of speed and print quality is what decided the model of the printer we bought. The P4515 prints at around 60 pages per minute, and when it prints, every single page is printed accurately and precisely. At 1200 dpi, the capabilities are there to print detailed and decent images. We don’t do that with our one, although we did test a few to try it out. Each image was detailed, the rendering was exactly like the original and the grayscale made it look almost color.

Text printing is where out interest lies, and where the P4515 excels. There isn’t much difference in print quality between draft mode and normal. Draft prints a little quicker so we tend to use that. You don’t really notice a difference between a 600 and a 1200 dpi printer in text, but psychologically it works for us. Even exotic fonts, headlines or postscripts are printed faithfully and without fault. All edges are crisp and clean, edges are either sharp or round, whichever they are supposed to be, and the fill in larger points is deep black.

The print speed is a boon to us, we need to print a lot so it makes a real difference to our productivity. The included gigabit Ethernet is also a nice move, communication is swift and the 540Mhz processor handles whatever we throw at it with equal gusto.

The P4515 is designed to perform, and while I can vouch for other users, it does for us. It does what we want, when we want how we want, and that’s about all I need from a printer.

Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550

Buying a Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550 has helped me achieve a higher level of efficiency at work. Before that we had a separate scanner, printer and fax machine. The Canon Copier Imageclass MF5550 laser multifunction machine allows me and my staff at the office to do all our printing, scanning, copying and faxes on one piece of equipment. The system is smaller than you think and does not cover too much space.

The machine comes with an automatic fifty sheet document feeder. There is a storage capacity of 250 sheets in the paper tray which suits me fairly well, and is generally sufficient for small businesses or enthusiastic home users. The manufacturer promises a printing and copying speed of nineteen pages per minute, however I think practically it is a little less than that. Personally, I think this is not very fast, but I prefer the machine due to many of its other advantages.

I get good quality prints at a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. The machine has a single cartridge system as it’s a monochrome machine, which keeps things simple, and cheap. This all in one machine is compatible with all the common operating systems and there are no problems that I have faced with the installation or drivers. The machine comes with a one year limited warranty so it does not hurt to give it a try.

The Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550 gives me a good resolution and image quality in scanning too. The scanner has an optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi and an interpolated resolution quality of 9600 x 9600 dpi. The OCR software that comes with the machine allows for editing the scanned text documents. The machine gives high quality scanning options and I am pretty satisfied with what I get.

The built-in fax machine has saved me the money and space required for separate equipment for faxing too. The modem speed is 33.6 kbps with a transmission reception memory of 99 pages. There are a number of different options available for photocopying as well and I am able to produce copies of all sizes on the Canon Copier.

For people who want to save money and get good quality with their documents at the same time, I recommend the Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550 as a useful machine.

Resetter Printer Epson Stylus T20 T20E Blinking

Heres my share Printer Software Epson Resetter T20 and T20E or Epson Printer Adjustment Program T20 and T20E. The trick is similar to Epson Printer How to Reset the others. The setting is there a way to include such software, you can simply download and read it. Actually this is a Software Resetter Software Trial but after going through the modification process could eventually be used without the PC Settings.

Brother MFC 845CW

I work from home and was looking for an all-in-one printer to carry out all the tasks I needed to do every day. The Brother MFC-845cw was just the printer I was looking for, as it also came with wireless networking and a cordless phone. While my office isn’t small, space is still limited, so an all-in-one appealed to me, and Brother has a good reputation as a manufacturer, which is what clinched the deal.

The way it has been designed it looks okay in my office. It certainly isn’t the gray or putty colored monstrosity I had feared it would be. It has a digital telephone answering service for when I’m away. Clients can always leave messages for me which I can retrieve later, meaning I’m never really out of touch. The answering machine can save up to 99 messages or up to 29 minutes of speech, which is plenty enough.

The machine allows me to print, scan and fax from my office computer. It prints really fast, up to 27 pages per minute in mono and 22 pages per minute in color. It has a flip up 2.5 inch LCD display which enables me to view and print faxes and photos from my digital camera media card without using a computer. The 1.5 pico prints photos in fine quality and in accurate colors, which is ideal.

The automatic document feeder can hold up to ten pages for fax, copy and scan while the loading paper tray can hold up to 100 sheets of paper. The bypass tray can hold up to 20 sheets of 4x6 glossy papers without taking out the standard paper.

I have a Mac and it works fine with my computer however it can also work with a Windows operating systems too. Not all printers have Apple drivers, or work particularly well with Macs. This one does however, which is a bonus as I didn’t want an Apple printer. The software that it comes with for Mac is Presto! Page Manager and for Windows it comes with an award winning software known as ScanSoft PaperPort SE.

The results of this printer were great which you would normally receive from the most expensive printers available out there in the market. The printer is powerful and has worked brilliantly ever since I installed it. The low toner usage is a bonus but the true test of a manufacturer us when something goes wrong.

Brother didn’t let me down. There were some voice issues with the cordless phone which came after I adjusted the volume settings and the echo mechanism. Whenever I spoke in to the phone, I heard a hissing sound from the other end. That a problem but then I spoke to a Brother support representative who helped me troubleshoot the problem and now the voice quality is great.

Epson R200 R210 R300 R310 Waste Ink Counter Pad Reset

Here is how to reset the waste counter for the Epson R200, R210, R300 and R310 printers.
  • Press and hold “Stop”, “Maintenance”, and “Power” buttons for about 10 seconds. A message will come on the screen saying counter is reset and to turn the printer off. The R200 and others don’t have a screen so just wait until the 10 seconds is up.
  • Turn the printer off, unplug the power cord. Wait about 1 minute and power the printer back up. The counter will be reset. That’s all there is to the reset procedure.

Is the waste pad full ?

If the waste pad is actually full and ink is about to overflow, then you need to install a waste container. You can see the waste pad by opening the access panel on the back of the printer.

Changing the waste pad requires almost complete disassembly of the printer, it is a big job. There is an easier way.

Open the access panel on the rear of the printer (remove screw) and look inside carefullly with a flashlight. You will see a tube (down and to your left) coming from the cleaning pump and it will have an open end on it. This is the tube that delivers ink to the waste pad.

Use a piece of coathanger wire or equivalent, and fish out this piece of tube. Bring it to the outside of the printer, thru the access panel.

Find yourself a suitable container (Tupperware or a plastic cup or jar) that is not too tall. Put the tube into this container and secure the tube and container so they won’t come apart or lose connection if the printer is moved.

If you wish you can make a hole or notch in the access panel cover so it can be replaced.

Now the ink will go into this container and not into the waste pad inside the printer. If it gets full, dump it.

Canon PC920

The Canon PC920 is the predecessor to the PC940. It is a personal desktop copier that measures 17.5 inches by 12 by 20 inches wide. At 42 pounds it is a hefty machine, which hopefully means the build quality reflects what we have come to expect from Canon over the past few years.

While not the most aesthetically pleasing device in the world, it’s difficult to fault the solid construction and no-nonsense design. It’s functional and intended to fit in with other office devices. The PC920 was released before Canon came up with their RAPID toner technology so it isn’t as quick to react as the PC940, but is still a competent performer nonetheless.

Even though the device is fairly small, it can cope with letter or legal sized paper with ease. There is a 250 sheet paper cassette that slots into the front and works effortlessly. Along with the single sheet use on the platen, brings the capacity up to 251 sheets. The glass and copier engine can also cope with books and other 3D objects, and will give a surprisingly good copy even though the lid might be open.

The PC940 had an instant warm-up facility, while the 920 doesn’t have that, warm up is only 10 seconds. A further 10 seconds will have the first completed copy ready for you. That’s pretty impressive for a copier, even a smaller desktop one.

Print quality is excellent. Every single copy came out perfectly when we tested. Our test document is 24 pages long and designed to put office equipment of all descriptions through its paces. The PC920 didn’t let us down. Each and every copy had the same contrast, brightness and toner density. Graphs, images and even photographs were rendered accurately and came out at a steady rate of 10 pages per minute.

For users who work from home, run a small business or simply do a bit of copying, the Canon PC920 is an excellent little machine. It’s low duty cycle, and small footprint means it’s ideal for its target market. With toner cartridges that last for 4000 sheets and cost less than $40, it doesn’t cost the earth to own. It performs well enough for most needs, even copying photos proficiently. The PC920 is a good little copier and well worth a look if you’re in the market for one.

HP LaserJet P2055

The HP LaserJet P2055 isn’t as ugly as many printers I have worked with. In fact it’s quite sleek, and the dark gray/blue on one side makes a nice contrast to the light gray of the rest of the chassis.

I bought one of these, used, from a well known internet auction site, and haven’t looked back since. I used to work with one in the office of my old employer and had found it easy to work with, which prompted my purchase when I began working for myself.

I got the HP LaserJet P2055dn, with the gigabit networking and expanded 128Mb memory. While I don’t really need it, the ability to network it comes in handy, especially when the kids want to print something for school. The running costs are suitably low, and this is mono only so I don’t mind them using it. The built in duplexer also helps keep the running costs down, especially with larger print jobs. Talking of running costs, the toners last 2300 pages and are only $70. That’s much cheaper than my old inkjet, for quite similar print quality.

Which leads me on nicely to the printing. At up to 33 pages a minute, the P2055 is no slouch. It slows down a bit for large images, but still works at an acceptable rate of knots. Text quality is excellent, and as this is mainly what I print, I find it more than acceptable. Whatever size point I use, the edges are straight, corners crisp and overall quality great. When I do print images, they come out detailed, aren’t grainy and the grayscale does well coping with colors. The 1200 dpi print engine also helps with images, although you can’t really notice the extra detail with text.

The instant start feature is a great innovation. From power off, the first print can appear in as little as 8 seconds. Now I’m no slave driver, but that’s seriously impressive, whatever your impatience level.

So if the built-in duplexing, gigabit networking, fast print speed, good print quality and easy management don’t convince you that the HP LaserJet P2055 is a good buy, there’s nothing I can say to change your mind. If you want an excellent, scalable and capable printer for a small network, this is the one to get.

Gestetner DSm 616

Everyone wants greater productivity and the Gestetner DSm-616 digital copier system has this feature in abundance. I have been using Gestetner DSm-616 for a year now and I have yet to face any issues. I will explain in the following lines why I have no complaints with the Gestetner DSm-616.

The most striking feature of Gestetner DSm-616 is its comprehensiveness. It is a combination of fax machine, printer and photo copier. I now have no need of buying another machine and spending hundreds of dollars on these purchases. The Gestetner DSm-616 is an all encompassing printer/copier device for me. Yes, I do use its fax features but not as regularly as copying and printing.

My first experience of using the Gestetner DSm-616 was a breeze. It was easy to install and I did not face any difficulty in using this machine. It is even easier to use the Gestetner DSm-616 as there is an LCD panel with scroll down menus and other features.

The printer has standard 600 sheet paper capacity with a maximum of 1,600 sheet paper capacity; it can accommodate paper sizes up to up to 11" x 17". The Toner cartridge is superb and there are no issues with spreading or poor printing and copying. An electronic sorter is provided in Gestetner DSm-616 and this has made things easier for us; we earlier used to spend hours in manual sorting of photocopied documents. The printing speed is 21 pages per minute and resolution provided is 600 x 600 dpi; it of course provides great printing features.

The Gestetner DSm-616 offers network printing and offers support for PCL5e/6 and optional Adobe® PostScript 3. Connectivity is provided through USB2.0 and 10/100 BaseT Ethernet interfaces along with optional Bluetooth and IEEE802.11b interfaces. I do not have to sort through the tray selection as it is done automatically. Envelope printing is not of the highest quality but still good for us and better than ordinary printers. Duplex printing is a great feature and its automatic selection is even better. It has reduced our printing time to a significant degree.

The Gestetner DSm-616 offers black and white scanning and supports network TWAIN and scan to email functions. Overall, the Gestetner DSm-616 is a good digital copier system and I am satisfied with its performance. There have been no issues so far and the Gestetner DSm-616 is working efficiently. If asked to given a rating to Gestetner DSm-616, I will give it four and a half stars.

Dell 1710n

The Dell 1710n is the networked version of the indomitable 1710 monochrome laser printer. It is targeted directly at home users and small businesses and is the ideal candidate if you’re looking for a good quality, cost effective laser printer.

The 1710n comes with networking as standard, with a 10/100 Ethernet port. Dell also offer a wireless adapter which adds a lot of freedom when it comes to cabling and placing the printer. It also has the standard USB and parallel ports if you don’t want to network it.

The build quality is solid, the design functional. It’s basically a black and grey box with the paper output on top and the connections at the back. The control panel consists of two buttons and some LED’s which warn of jams, low toner and all the usual printer statuses. The two buttons are to either start or stop print jobs, so use is simple and trouble free.

The hardware is also built to last. The chassis feels solid, but isn’t too heavy. Inside there is a 366Mhz processor with 16Mb of memory which can be expanded to 144Mb. The paper drawer can hold up to 800 sheets of paper, but with the output being on top, there is no way the printer could be left to its own devices too long before the prints were all over the floor.

Print speed was impressive at 27 pages per minute, which is pretty quick for this kind of price. The quality on text prints was very good, with clear edges and even spread no matter what size the text was printed at. Images weren’t so good, but then this is a laser printer, which is designed for document printing rather than images. Reproduction was still pretty good, but there was definite banding visible when printing a photograph.

Changing paper and toner is as easy as it gets. The paper drawer slides out easily, and a button on the side releases a flap on the front to reach the toner. The cartridge provided will print up to 3000 sheets of standard 5% coverage, which should last the average user quite a while. Replacements are decent value and are rated to last for 6000 prints. Most online retailers like Quikshiptoner.com have them in ready supply, so there is no problem replacing them when the need arises.

Overall the Dell 1710n is a worthwhile contender for the home/home office market. It’s no-nonsense styling and operation will suit most people who don’t want to waste time sifting through hundreds of options every time they want to print something. Cost of ownership is credibly low, which adds to the attraction of this good value machine.

PostScript Level 2 Advantages over Postsctipt Level1

PostScript Level 2 provides the following improvements over PostScript Level 1.

Composite Fonts: PostScript Level 2 supports character sets larger than 256 characters, unlike in PostScript Level 1. Japanese fonts require character sets larger than 256 characters.

Device-independent Colour: PostScript Level 2 supports the CIE (Commission International de lEclairage) colour system, as well as CMYK and RGB. The CIE system enables users to create, view, and print colours with more predictable results on a variety of displays and printers.

Forms: A form is a set of graphics, text, and/or images stored in memory for overlaying onto printed pages.

Better Halftone Algorithms

Improved Memory Management: Memory in a PostScript Level 2 device is dynamically-shared between all resources (font cache, form cache, page buffer. etc), resulting in increased efficiency. The memory taken up by each resource expands whenever necessary.

Patterns: PostScript Level 2 allows patterns in addition to solid colours. Recently used patterns are cached in memory, optimizing repeated use of the same pattern.

Printer-specific features: PostScript Level 2 can specify the requirements for a page and can control standard features (e.g., number of copies) and optional device features (e.g., duplex printing, multiple paper trays).

Copystar CS 2030

The Copystar CS 2030 is a well-built copier that has the multi-function capability that all businesses require in today’s technology dependent world. The CS 2030 is another in the long line of efficient but sturdy copiers produced by Copystar, the MFP division of Kyocera Mita America.

As a basic unit, the CS 2030 is a digital copier capable of digitally storing an original document and printing it multiple times. This allows for noise-reduction, but more importantly helps preserve and shield original documents from the wear and tear of older model copiers. In fact, the CS 2030 can continuously copy up to 250 pages automatically

As for specifications, the CS 2030 comes with a standard copier memory of 64 MB RAM and can produce an impressive volume of up to 30,000 pages per month. Furthermore, it has two paper drawers that each has a paper capacity of 250—along with a multi-purpose tray that can hold an additional 50 pages. Copystar claims that the CS 2030 can print 20 pages a minute—however, consumers should remember that this number refers specifically to pages printed in black-and-white.

The CS 2030 advertises a warm-up time of 30 seconds and a first-copy time of about 5.5 seconds. The consumer would be pleasantly surprised to find out that these figures are fairly accurate in practice.

In terms of digital resolution, the CS 2030 offers a crisp 600 dpi to its users. It also has a copy ratio from 50% to 200%—in this new era of digital copiers this ratio is industry standard. The copier, while advanced, is not cutting-edge, as can be seen from its ability to print in grayscale and not color ink, as some businesses might require.

The Copystar CS 2030 really starts to become attractive when considering the array of options that are offered. The CS 2030 is modular in design, allowing it to be easily fitted with a printer and fax-machine, making the CS 2030 an MFP that most offices would look to buy. As this standalone digital copier can be converted in to a fully functional network-connected printer/scanner/fax machine, it is ideal for a smaller workgroup or a division of an office.
The optional printer comes with an upgradeable 8 MB memory and is compatible with PC’s and Mac’s. The fax machine capability uses the industry-standard Super-G3 Laser Fax, making the machine ready for everyday faxing. The optional scanner is also fairly standard, as is an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) allowing for increased productivity.

The Copystar CS 2030 is a solid digital copier. However, its true quality is unveiled when it is converted into an easy-to-use multi-purpose copier/fax-machine/scanner, which is ideal for most small business units.

Brother DCP 7020

The Brother DCP-7020 is a laser copier, printer and scanner all in one.  It doesn’t offer fax, which is why it isn’t classed as a true multifunction device, but it’s as near as you can get to one.

As a copier the Brother DCP-7020 is very good.  It can output monochrome copies at a rate of 20 per minute and can do it all day long.  The reproduction is excellent, text and images are reproduced with clarity and have a definite crispness to them.  Images and photographs are also copied and printed well.  Even though the machine is monochrome, a color photograph is translated well into the varying shades of gray.
As a printer, the Brother DCP-7020 works very well.  The prints are also produced at a steady 20 sheets per minute and are of a high quality, as you would expect from a laser device.  There are all the usual features you would expect from a printer such as multi-printing, enlargement or reduction, configurable contract, brightness and tone levels as well as a large enough paper tray to hold 250 sheets of paper.

The scanner works in color and allows you to scan normally on to paper, or electronically into an email or pdf.  Again, the quality is good, and the 35 sheet paper tray means you can leave it alone to do its work.  It can also copy books and magazines.

Setup and configuration is a breeze, with an easy to use menu system and extensive configuration options.  Everything you need is on the driver CD included in the box, and Brother seem to release updates regularly.

Cost of ownership is modest, with a reasonable purchase price, Energy Star compliance and reasonable toner cost.  It even comes with everything to get you started , except paper of course!  The starter toner is good for around fifteen hundred pages, so it will be a little while before you need to order more.

These benefits make it ideal for the small or start up business.  Large organizations can still benefit from the DCP-7020 as it is a real workhorse.  It rises to every demand made of it, and will copy and print all day long.

After-sales support is also good.  If, in the unlikely event you find yourself needing it, the toll-free number actually puts you through to a native English speaking representative who can talk you through troubleshooting the device.  If your problem isn’t solved, they will call you back and an engineer will offer their assistance until the problem is addressed.

The true value of a product can only be assessed when it is in use.  The DCP-7020 won’t let you down.  For businesses of any size looking for a steady, reliable printer, copier, scanner could do a lot worse than the Brother DCP-7020.

The Samsung ML 3051ND Laser Printer

OVERVIEW:  Samsung offers a laser printer that is big enough to handle the demands of over 20 networked computers, but still be reasonably compact and priced. At the top of Samsung’s ML-3050 Series, the ML-3051ND is a monochrome laser with a built-in Ethernet network and duplex printing capability.

PROS:
The ML-3051ND’s compact design & footprint takes up only a 1.9 square foot area on a table, while able to still hold legal-size paper within its tray.

The “D” in ML-3051ND is for “duplexing”. Two-sided printing is an economic and environmentally friendly way to save on paper. This feature, along with the options to print pages either Long Edge or Short Edge, enables the printer to be used for desktop publishing of bound booklets, catalogs, and calendars.

The ML-3051ND prints fast--be it single-sided or 2-sided. It does take 44 seconds for the printer to warm up from a cold boot, but once it’s up this laser starts chugging letter-size prints at 30 pages per minute 1-side. Even printing on both sides of a page at 24 ppm, the ML-3051ND is as fast as many single-side laser printers.

At 1200 x 1200 dpi B&W resolution, the ML-3051ND keeps text sharp--even at 6-point font sizes--and does a decent job with graphics. To keep from consuming too much toner, the printer has a 600 dpi resolution with a text-enhance or image-enhance switch.  The Toner Save feature allows for a 40% toner life increase while keeping images clear and readable.

The ML-3051ND comes standard with a 250-sheet cassette tray, with an optional second 250-sheet stacking cassette. The flip-door reveals a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray that can handle transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, 3” x 5” postcards up to 8½” x 14” legal paper of various bond weights.

The control panel on the ML-3051ND has a multi-line LCD Display, plus several buttons that make manual control of the printer relatively intuitive, including a “duplex” button for on-the-fly double-sided printing. Through the control panel, printer information, configuration, emulation, and network settings can be done. Administrators can also perform these changes remotely with Samsung’s SyncThru web application.

The “N” in ML-3051ND is for “network is built in”.  The Ethernet 10/100 Base TX interface makes it ready to support networked computers in an office, department, or a classroom. You can choose between Parallel, USB, or Ethernet connectivity. So, no matter how old or new your computer is, the ML-3051ND can handle it.

This laser printer comes stock with 64MB of memory, allowing the ML-3051ND to easily handle workloads from multiple computer requests. An additional DIMM RAM slot is available to expand printer memory up to a whopping 320MB.

Understanding the printing needs of today’s businesses in providing support for the major software applications, Samsung has installed a full set for print emulators that should satisfy the most diverse office. Emulators include PostScript3, HP PCL6, IBM ProPrinter, and EPSON.

CONS:
If you’re used to the smaller ML laser printers, get ready to flex your biceps. At 33 pounds, the densely-packed ML-3051ND will need a study place to stay.

The printer produces 54dB of sound printing, idling at 39 dB. To give you an idea of what that means, 60 decibels is the level of typical conversations and 40 decibels is the level of whispering. You probably don’t want to have this network printer stationed in a conference room printing when a meeting is in progress. But when placed in the copy room or in the middle of a busy office floor, the noise is barely noticeable.

With more bells and whistles than other ML printers, warming up takes the ML-3051ND about 35 seconds -- 44 seconds if in Sleep mode. From Standby it takes 8.5 seconds between print jobs. Delays like this are unacceptable if the printer was for a single user, but in a network environment where it usually takes the user about 3 to 5 minutes to pick up their printout, the delay is hardly noticeable.

INK/TONER NEEDS:
The ML-3051ND’s toner and drum are integrated in a single cartridge, making it easy to maintain. Right out the box, the printer comes with the standard size toner, able to print up to 4,000 pages.  An 8,000 double-capacity toner option is also available to double the time between toner replacements.

SOFTWARE:
The ML-3051ND has one of the better software packages. Not only does it have the basic printing properties for Mac and Linux, but for Windows users there’s an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

The drivers also enable 64-bit and Microsoft Server operating systems to be able to use the ML-3051ND. This may be considered a no-brainer, but there are printers with software that absolutely will not install on Server 2003 & 2008.

To make network printer configurations and notifications easy, Samsung’s SyncThru Web Service allows printer changes to be made using your IE, Safari, or Firefox browser. The software is not part of the CD and has to be downloaded from Samsung’s web site.

Panasonic DP 4510

Panasonic has a good reputation when it comes to electrical goods. They carry that trend with them into office equipment with the Panasonic DP-4510. It is a large mono laser printer, copier, scanner and fax built for busy offices that need high quality documents quickly.

The mainstay of the DP-4510 is scalability. Just about every aspect of it can be changed, upgraded or enlarged. There is a dizzying array of paper handling options including seven types of paper drawers, network scanners, print servers, memory upgrades, hard disk, and a variety of finishers. While this may seem a little excessive, it does allow customers to tailor the machine to their exact requirements.

There is a good-sized control panel on the front with one of the clearest LCD screens we have seen. The menu is very straightforward and easy to use. Surrounding the screen are the controls that make everything happen. They are also clear and easy to use, with each function having a separate control button to avoid any confusion.

The DP-4510 is good at what it does, with a print speed of around 45 pages per minute for a typical business document. Despite the speed, there is no compromise with features or performance.

Print quality is good with text and images appearing clear and sharp, even down to finest detail. The DP-4510 didn’t stumble over image heavy documents like some machines do. Each one was printed faithfully, with the 256 shade grayscale accurately representing the full-color original.

Copying is obviously the same print speed and quality, but also has the usual resize and document manipulation options too. The scanner is effective, and pretty quick and produces good scans at 600 dpi. The option of a network scanner adds even more functionality to the device and is a popular upgrade.

Because of the paper handling options there is no standard minimum. The most popular fittings are 1550 sheets, with a maximum of 6250. There is also a bypass facility of 50 sheets and an automatic document feeder which can handle a further 70 sheets.

Toner is good value considering the brand, high yield cartridges are to print around 24,000 sheets before needing replacement. The upgradeable memory or the optional hard drive would allow the DP-4510 to be left to its own devices for a significant period of time.

This is a great multifunction device for those who need good quality prints at speed. Ease of use, and the optional bolt-ons means you can really design a machine that does what you want, how you want it.

Brother HL 2070N

The Brother HL-2070N is an update to the previous Brother HL-2040, with a slimmed down print driver and networking. It builds on the qualities of its predecessors and improves on all of them.

Like the HL-2040 the HL-2070N is aimed at the light duty home or small office. It isn’t designed or built for heavy duty use. Saying that, we tested extensively and the HL-2070N rose to the occasion each time.

The printer is slim, and has quite a low profile, thanks to the slimmer printer driver. There is a 250 sheet paper drawer at the bottom and a single sheet multipurpose feeder above it. The paper feed is smooth and doesn’t seem to jam, even when we tried to simulate one, the paper was pushed out and re-fed correctly.

Print quality is good, if a little light. With the default settings, black looked more like charcoal, and images came out a little light too. This can easily be addressed in the configuration though, by setting it a little darker. There was some banding seen on images, but again, nothing that would cause the prints to be wasted. Bearing in mind that this printer costs less than $200, the print quality is good. Print speed was also more than acceptable at a rated 20 pages per minute for a text sheet. Response is good, with the first page appearing at around 10 seconds after being ordered. These are almost commercial printer speeds for a third of the price.

Toner is also reasonably priced at around $30 for a 2500 page version, with drums at $58, which are said to last for 20000.

Controls are simple, with a single Go button and four lights above it to indicate paper, toner, drum and power states. They change color, depending on the state which makes checking on the HL-2070N from a distance a breeze.

Surprisingly for this price, the HL-2070N also includes an Ethernet connection and a print server. While this is a welcome addition to any machine, this is aimed at home users. The whole family will be able to share the resources without having to buy many of them.

The upshot is that the HL-2070N is a solid, well built printer that will serve families or small workgroups well. The convenience of laser printing far outweighs that of inkjet, and this printer is a product of that.

HP LaserJet 2200

If you are looking for a user friendly printer that is ideal for small work requirements and while it is built for small printing tasks it offers high quality, resolution, fast speed, efficiency and reliability at an affordable rate, look no further than the HP LaserJet 2200.

This printer has been designed with a large number of additional features and many additional components and programs that will enhance and aid the functioning of this machine. Furthermore, many users will attest, this printer is versatile and can adequately handle both small and large printing tasks.

Talking about numbers and other specifics of this printer, it prints at a speed of up to eighteen pages per minute and with a low warm and start up time it is capable of producing the first print in under fifteen seconds which is impressive. The HP LaserJet 2200 also allows automatic dual side printing which serves to save time and paper. While the dual side printing is being done, you will not have to stand over the printer for long stretches of time because its dual printing feature does not require manual support. It switches sides on its own so that all you need to do it specify data to be printed and select print.
In addition to being able to use the computers memory to retrieve data, integrate and organize it, retrieve it and then finally print it with the HP LaserJet 2200, you can also transfer data from your PC, PDA or cell phone on to the printer via the fast infrared receiver that has been built in to it.

With a resolution of 1200 dots per inch x 1200 dots per inch, high print quality is guaranteed with bright colors, sharp features and overall neatness. the HP LaserJet 2200 can adequately handle up to three hundred and fifty sheets of paper at a time.

There are numerous additional products that show compatibility with the HP LaserJet 2200 and further enhance its working and efficiency. These include the original HP LaserJet 49a black print cartridge, the HP LaserJet CE505X black print cartridge, the LD remanufactures Hewlett Packard set of three black laser toner cartridges and more. In addition to being speedy, efficient, reliable and easy to use, this printer works very quietly which means that you will not at all be badgered by loud churns and clicks while the printing is working away.

HP LaserJet 4600hdn

If you want good quality prints in a hurry, the HP LaserJet 4600n might be just what you need. First released in 2002, we bought it new a little after that. In the intervening years, the models have been improved, refined and changed a lot since the 4600n was new, but we wouldn’t part with it for the world.

It might not be the fastest or sleekest printer in the world, but it has stuck with us through thick and thin and hasn’t let us down once. The only work we have had to do on it has been to change toner cartridges and unblock the odd jam. There are many more expensive printers I know of that demand much more than that from their users.

Hewlett Packard products have always been robust, we have had a few of them, and keep returning because of this and their reliability. Even the drawers are solid and still perform well, without coming loose or getting stuck after all these years.

It’s a 600 dpi print engine that manages to produce decent quality prints at around 17 pages a minute. I don’t time them anymore because it doesn’t interest me, but I did when we first got it and seem to remember that’s what it managed. The text quality is very good. Crisp, smooth text with dark black printing and straight edges make the lettering stand out loud and clear on the page. No other smudging or other markings on the page ensures the print is the only thing on the page to grab your attention.

The printer was originally designed for small workgroups, and I guess that’s what we are, two computers, a router and a printer. It’s easy to use, easy to maintain and gives us no problems whatsoever. The little control panel is easy to read, and the LCD clear enough to be able to understand from a short distance.

We only had to use HP’s Technical Support once, a couple of years ago when something broke, and their support person was good enough to be able to solve the problem in very little time. They sent a replacement part out to us and it didn’t cost us much at all. That’s another reason why we like HP. After-sales support is a true measure of the caliber of a company.

The HP LaserJet 4600n is an effective, reliable printer that doesn’t let you down. If you need a printer and see one of these, don’t hesitate.

Gestetner DSc 424

Touch screen technology has made things easier and the Gestetner DSc-424 is an excellent example of that. I am a freelancer but have been involved in some projects that require massive printing and photocopying. In my search for a combo device, I found the Gestetner DSc-424 and wasted no time in buying it. I have been using it for almost two months and results have been good so far.

Starting with the installation process, it was easy for me to install the Gestetner DSc-424. I just had to follow the guidelines of the user manual and it was a breeze. My main purpose of buying the Gestetner DSc-424 was its combination of fax, printer and photocopier along with a scanner. It is truly a great combination device with each part functioning well.

Printing options on the Gestetner DSc-424 are quite elaborate. It offers both colored and black and white printing. Printing speed is 24 to 32 pages per minute for black and white and 10 per minute for colored prints. It offers a standard resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. The user interface and connectivity features include Ethernet 10 base-T/100 base-TX and a USB 2.0, as well as Bi-directional IEEE1284 with Firewire (IEEE1394) and Wireless LAN networking (IEEE802.11b). There is also a Bluetooth Network protocol, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, SMB, AppleTalk and other options which are also included. The printer is fully supported on my Windows XP workstation and there are no glitches in using all of its features.

Copying facilities on the Gestetner DSc-424 are satisfactory. Copying speed is the same as printing speed with up to 32 black and white pages and 10 colored pages. The machine takes up to a minute in warming up though the official time is 99 seconds. Zoom of up to 400% is available and up to 100 multiple copies can be made. Two standard paper trays of 250 sheets are available with the Gestetner DSc-424. The DSc-424 also comes with a great toner cartridge which seems to be very economical.

I do not use a scanner often but my experiences, though little, are worth mentioning. The scanning feature offers A3 and A5 sizes and supports scanner-to-email and scanner-to-folder options. TIFF, JPG and PDF formats are easily accommodated in the scanner option. I have used the facsimile function just a couple of times and there were no glitches in the whole process. It has a great modem that offers up to 33.3kbps speed unlike other machines that hardly go beyond 14.4 kbps.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I will give Gestetner DSc-424 8.5 marks for its stellar performance and great printing and copying features.
