HP P2055 Gigabit Laser Printer

OVERVIEW:   Gone are the days when “Patience was a virtue”. These days everybody wants everything faster and they want it “now”. The 2008 HP LaserJet P2055 offers print speeds up to 35 ppm, a shorter warm-up delay, and Gigabit Ethernet support for smaller business needs.

PROS:
The P2055 comes in two different models: The P2055d with duplexer and the P2055dn with duplexing and Gigabit Ethernet. The Gigabit card is available as an optional accessory and can be easily added to a P2055d with just a screwdriver.
Having half the weight of the P3005 series, the 22-pound, cube-like LaserJet also has a smaller 14½” x 14½” footprint for easy placement in any corner or credenza -- just leave enough ventilation space around the vents.  Paper trays and toner are all easily accessed from the front, reducing the need of moving the printer for refilling.
The 2-line LCD display, LEDs and 5-button controls are relatively intuitive, taking up little space on the printer. On printers with the network option, these controls can be accessed through a web-based application.
A 250-sheet cassette tray can support paperweights from 16# to 36# paper, and sizes ranging from 5½” x 8½” up to 8½” x 14”.  The P2055’s multi-purpose flip-tray holds up to 50 sheets of papers, cardstock, envelopes, and transparencies.
In less than 8 seconds, this laser starts printing two-sided letter-size prints at 35 ppm per side, a decent speed for laser printers in 2008. In monochrome using 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution, the P2055 keeps text sharp--even at 6-point font sizes--and does a decent job with printing graphics in B&W. With an instant-on fuser system, there are no more long restart times when the printer is in power save mode. Like all LaserJets, the P2055 comes with a toner save mode to conserve on ink.
The P2055 base unit starts out with 64MB of memory, which is sufficient for non-networking uses and can handle most jobs. To handle low-volume network demands, the P2055n comes with 128MB. All models can be expanded to a maximum of 320MB.  For a typical computer classroom, I recommend installing a minimum of 128MB in a HP printer.  HP has installed a full set for print emulators that should satisfy the most diverse office. Emulators include PostScript3, HP PCL5e and PCL6.
CONS:
The 250-sheet paper tray is woefully undersized for business use. For personal and home use, a 250-sheet tray is sufficient--so long as you’re not someone whose home is their office. It’s typical for even a small office to go through a ream of paper in a single day.  A second 500-sheet add-on tray is available as an optional purchase that will hold an entire ream of paper and increase total paper capacity on the P2055 to 800 sheets.
This is a noisy printer. While idling below 30 dB, the printer produces 55 dB of sound printing. To give you an idea of what that means: 60 decibels is the level of typical conversations and 30 decibels is the sound of a quiet night in a desert.  The noise while printing is barely discernable sitting in a classroom or office alcove, but you wouldn’t want to have it sitting next to your desk.
INK / TONER NEEDS:
The LaserJet P2055 toner and drum are integrated in a single cartridge, making it easy to maintain. It comes with a standard 2,300-sheet yield toner cartridge, but you can buy replacement toner with a higher yield of 6,500-sheets.

Samsung SCX 6320F 4 in 1 Multi function Laser Printer

OVERVIEW:  There are times when the printing feature of a multi-function printer is not the first thing on your shopping list. Many times a good printer is already in the office. So now you’re looking for an all-in-one that can handle high-volume copying, but also can perform scanning and faxing—with or without a computer. The Samsung SCX-6320F 4-in-1 offers high-resolution, high-volume standalone copying.

PROS:
If you don’t want to turn on the computer every time you want to make a copy, a fax, or e-mail a scan, you don’t have to.  The SCX-6320F has a full control panel with an on-screen menu for printer setup and operation without the need for software. A traditional QWERTY keyboard as well as a numeric keypad allows for text and number entries. Twenty programmable keys allow for 1-touch dialing for up to 40 fax numbers. An address book function allows for more frequently used fax numbers to be stored and retrieved, speed dialing of 200 numbers. To protect unwanted access, fax pages can be stored in the SCX-6320F’s 16MB memory; a 4-digit security password can be activated to allow authorized users to print the stored faxes. A pass-through external phone jack on the back of the printer allows for plugging a telephone or an answering machine.

The Duplex Automatic Document Feeder (DADF) allows copying or scanning of up to 50 2-sided originals.
This printer has some serious paper capacity. The SCX-6320F comes standard with a 550-sheet cassette tray, capable of holding over a ream of letter or legal-size paper. The flip-door on the side of the printer reveals a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray that can handle transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, and to 8½” x 14” legal paper of various bond weights.

The color scanner portion of the SCX-6320F is compatible with TWAIN and XP/Vista’s WIA standards.  Copy options include changing image magnification from 0.5 to 2 times the original size, and up to 99 multi-page copying. Printing speeds are about 22 pages per second.
The SCX-6300F gives you a choice of using the USB 2.0 or Parallel interface to connect to a single workstation. Ethernet LAN is available as an option, or simply your computer’s operating system to make it a shared printer.

CONS:
There is no official mention of the amount of printer memory the Samsung SCX-6320F has. The only memory listed is 16MB for the fax function. If printer memory is shared with the RAM used for remembering and storing fax numbers, this may cause delays in printing as the fax starts to fill up the memory.
This 4-in-1 is one of Samsung’s noisier multi-function printers. In operation, the SCX-6320F produces 60dB of sound and 40db sitting idle. To give you an idea of that means, 60dB is the sound of normal conversations and 40db is the sound level of whispering.  Having only USB or Parallel connections means whatever computer the SCX-6320F is cabled to, that user will have to get used to having a noisy office.

INK/TONER NEEDS:
The SCX-6320F has separate toner and drum to help reduce overall consumables costs. The standard 8,000-page starter toner and drum cartridges are included in the box. The drum unit will need to be replaced ever 20,000 pages—which is about the same time the DADF rubber pad will need replacing.

SOFTWARE:
The software in the CD-ROM is primarily for Windows compatible machines. For Windows users, the SmartThru4 software provides the most features, supporting not only scanning and printing, but offering an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

The Linux software package is not included with the CD and has to be downloaded from Samsung’s website to support printer and scanning functions. The Linux Unified Driver Configurator software allows for scanned images to manipulated and edited.

Brother HL 5250DN

If you are in the market for a fast, reliable network laser printer then the HL-5250DN could be just the machine you need.  This monochrome printer is aimed squarely at businesses that want good quality, quick printing at low cost.  As long as they don’t mind compromising on quality.

The HL-5250DN will output up to 30 pages per minute at 600dpi and has a maximum resolution of 1200 x 1200dpi.  That is an acceptable rate for any business printer.  The print quality is good, but not superb, with the edges of letter not as crisp as they could be.

The built-in duplexer means that the HL-5250DN can print double sided when required.  Ideal for printing booklets, brochures or leaflets.  The print speed slows to 13 pages a minute when printing duplex, which is still a respectable rate.  Double sided printing is also good for those companies who are trying to control the expense of consumables.

The toner seems to last a lifetime.  The standard printing option is quite efficient and there are built in economy modes for internal monochrome documents that cuts down on the toner used considerably.  Replacement drums and cartridges are reasonably priced, with the “High-Yield” toner cartridge purporting to be able to print over 7000 standard business pages before it needs refilling.

The HL-5250DN also has a built in network port, so can be quickly added to a corporate network or workgroup.  This is a feature that isn’t as prevalent in printers at this price point as it should be, and it is nice to see one included here.  Having integrated networking is also good for managing the printer.

The HL-5250DN comes with a built in web server, which allows management and configuration via a web-interface.  The administrator can monitor usage and consumables as well as adjust settings on the fly.  This adds to the usefulness of this device overall.

Included with the HL-5250DN package is a comprehensive driver suite and administration application.  This application allows you to control every aspect of the printer, from its default settings, permissions. To the deployment of drivers.  The BRAdmin suite allows the bundling of drivers that can be pushed to each client PC to keep administration as easy as possible.

As a piece of office equipment, the HL-5250DN is a good purchase.  It is easy to install, configure and use.  The web interface makes it easy to monitor and control, and the network connectivity means it can be quickly integrated into a workgroup and shared.  Consumables are easily procured from online retailers and will last longer than other brands if used properly.

There are many other printers on the market that can do everything the HL-5250DN can.  None of them can match the combination of ease of use and value for money.  The purchase price is low, the running cost is low meaning the cost per page is low.  Something most businesses value, especially at the moment.
